CyDen was established in 2002 to develop its revolutionary iPulse™ technology. The company, based is Swansea, Wales, has recruited a team of specialists which includes the inventors of the first laser technology for cosmetic applications such as hair removal, skin rejuvenation and acne. In fact, the team is responsible for the first patents and the first FDA approvals for laser technology in the field.

Polytherics has developed a process called TheraPEG for attaching Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) to protein and antibody based drugs – so called Biopharmaceuticals. Attaching PEG to such drugs (PEGylation) is known to improve their performance by keeping the drug in the body for a longer period. TheraPEG offers significant manufacturing savings when compared to the methods employed by competitors. Polytherics operates as a service business by PEGylating proteins and antibodies for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and charges upfront fees for the initial work, milestone payments as the customer’s drug moves towards the market and royalties on sales once the drug is sold on the market. The market for PEGylation consists of companies with existing products that need improving as well as companies with new products in development that require improvement prior to embarking on clinical trials.

PWB Health Ltd (PWB) was established to bring novel consumer healthcare products to market. The first product, called the BreastChecker is a device that helps women with routine self examination for abnormalities or lumps on their breasts. Working prototypes have been used for some time now in various clinics and the feedback on their effectiveness is positive. In addition, recent consumer research showed a high level of interest among the target market. The device is the result of many years of research and refinement by Dr David Watmough who is a cancer specialist and previously Head of the Ultrasonics and Infrared Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Physics and Bio-engineering at Aberdeen University. The BreastChecker is protected by a patent (granted in March 2001) which describes the use of a battery operated handheld device for examining living tissues by shining light through the tissue.

Established in 2002 as a spin out company from The Institute of Cancer Research, UCL and Birkbeck College, Domainex combines internal drug discovery programmes with a profitable contract research business. In early 2007 Domainex purchased NCE Discovery, a chemical structures database company. Domainex now combines internal drug discovery programmes with leveraging that expertise to develop higher value intellectual property that can be licensed or sold at the earliest opportunity.

Both strands of the business leverage Domainex’s proprietary technology platforms; ‘Combinatorial Domain Hunting’ (CDH) and Leadbuilder: CDH is a revolutionary technique for cloning and expressing drug targets - a significant bottleneck in the drug discovery process; and Leadbuilder is a proprietary database of chemical structures – which allows small biotechnology companies to achieve the same high throughput screening power as large pharmaceutical companies.

NFAB is a knowledge-based company committed to the design and development of new nanotools particularly, initially in the area of focused electron and ion beam technology. It has patented an enabling technology which will allow a generation of miniature scanning electron microscopes, multiple-beam lithography machines and focussed ion beam millers to be manufactured. A spinout company from the University of St Andrews and Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Lumicure has developed the next generation of light based medical and cosmetic products using a new light emitting diode (LED) technologies. The technology can be applied for both home-use cosmetic applications such as acne and skin rejuvenation and medical applications such as non melanoma skin cancer and severe acne.

Lumicure is at an advanced stage of product development and has successfully conducted a human pilot trial for the treatment of non melanoma skin cancer using prototype devices.

DTV, founded in 1991, rents and sells (on hire purchase) domestic appliances to the sub prime sector. Most of its fleet comprises televisions, washing machines and DVD players, but other domestic appliances are available including fridges and freezers.

DTV originally operated in Cambridgeshire but has expanded into Birmingham, Manchester and Yorkshire. Since 2007 Dial a TV has made two acquisitions and this, combined with organic growth more than doubled the company’s number of contracts in 2007.
